Nothing like a good opener!

You've been psyched all day to see the show, been chilling in the parking lot enjoying the sights and sounds, and the venue is filling up with thousands of people who are your brothers and sisters. The first song of the evening sets the pace, the band telling everyone what kind of mood they're in.

What will they open with? Cold Rain and Snow? Jack Straw? Bertha??? Wouldn't a Sugaree be sweet? Let's hope it's going to be a smoker!

Enter Stanley Theatre 11-30-79

The Boys come out of the gates with their new song Alabama Getaway. Phil is just pounding out the base line, Brent is front and center, and Jerry just keeps soloing into oblivian. A nice 9 minute version of "let's blow the barn doors off this venue tonight!" They continue into Greatest Story, then an exquisite Peggy-o..... The show just gets better and better.

What are some of the best song openers? Songs that would turn the whole place upside down, set the tone for the rest of the evening?

Help>Slip>Franklin always floats my boat.

And an obscure 80's opener of Let the Good Times Roll could bring a smile to my face.

Get in the groove and let the good times roll
We're gonna stay here till we soothe our soul
If it takes all night long

Always a good reason to listen to Alpine '89.

Cold Rain and Snow
Bertha
Hell in a Bucket

You nailed it. "Alabama" always starts the crowd rockin'. Pair it w/ "Promised Land" & it gets even better.

This is interesting... I never was much of an Alabama Getaway fan. It does seem popular here on the forum though... Go figger again I guess...

Morning Dew (done many times), Truckin' (ditto). Of course in 1968 they often opened with Cryptical, Dark Star, or even Alligator--but that doesn't count.

'77 Half-Steps were typically good show openers.

The Morning Dew from 6/10/73 is a really good opener. How often was Morning Dew used as an opener?

Half Step > Franklin's was always a great way to start a show. This one is my all-time favorite, 30 + minutes with Phil powering the whole jam:

I also was fortunate to catch the Uncle John's > Playin > Uncle John's at Folsom Field to kick off the 15th anniv show, check out Phil on this one as well. A one time opener, but the best I ever saw:

Cold Rain and Snow.

Couple of my favorite 78 shows open with this. Not initially a great song, but it grows on you. Love the way it starts.
